CEO from Warner Bros. Discovery Discuss DC Movies' Future And the Reason for Cancelling Batgirl

Just two days ago, the DC Films brand saw a significant shakeup when the already-shot film Batgirl was dropped off the list of future DC films. As a result, neither HBO Max subscribers nor in theaters will be able to see it. After three months of development, the Wonder Twins movie was abruptly canceled, which shocked many people. Two Warner Bros. Discovery executives provided insight on the company's earnings call today for people who are now unsure of the current situation with DC Films. Regarding the franchise's future and gave further justification for canceling Batgirl.

Following CEO David Zaslav's announcement that there would be a written strategy for the future of DC movies, Warner Bros. Discovery's aspirations for its DC movies are starting to become a little more obvious.

Future of DC is on marvel path

The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, visited the stage as part of the company's quarterly financials to address audience queries about the company's future, particularly in light of the revelation that it had cancelled Batgirl despite the film being nearly done.

Zaslav said the firm has "reset" and will pursue a ten-year strategy exclusively for DC that will be akin to what Disney and Kevin Feige have done for Marvel rather than announcing any sort of retreat for DC movies.

David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, stated upfront that the DC brand remains a priority for this freshly combined company, to the extent that there is a precise 10-year strategy being applied to upcoming DC films. As Zaslav put it:

"… As we look at the opportunities that we have, broadly, DC is is one of the top of the list for us. We look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, these are brands that are known everywhere in the world. And the ability to drive those all over the world with great story is a big opportunity for us. We have done a reset. We've restructured the business where we're going to focus where there will be a team with a 10-year plan focusing just on DC. It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horn and and Bob Iger put together very effectively with Kevin Feige at Disney. We think that we could build a long term, much stronger, sustainable growth business out of DC. And as part of that, we're going to focus on quality."

The CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery mentioned upcoming movies the studio is all extremely enthused about, including Black Adam, Shazam, and Flash. “We’ve seen them. We think they’re terrific, and we think we can make them even better.”

After it was revealed that Batgirl will not be aired in theatres or on HBO Max, many people began to wonder what would become of the DC film franchise. Leslie Grace, JK Simmons, Brendan Fraser, and Michael Keaton all starred in the $90 million movie, which had already wrapped up production.

HBO Max also started covertly deleting additional films off its streaming platform, raising worries that the company will stop producing original, scripted material. But Zaslav has mentioned DC as a cornerstone of the recently established Warner Bros. Discovery, notably figures like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman.

As Zaslav stated, they would be concentrating on iconic figures like Superman and the Joker, who also revealed the release date for the follow-up, Joker Folie A Deux, which welcomes Lady Gaga to the cast.

Warner Bros. Discovery is standing by its current theatrical releases like Shazam, Aquaman, and The Flash, which will somehow fit into the company's goals. Time will tell what Warner Bros. Discovery's ten-year strategy for DC will look like.

A new streaming service that will launch in the summer of 2023 will be created by Warner Bros. Discovery by combining HBO Max and Discovery+, according to other financial announcements.
